Ed Oliver
Houston Herman/Applewhite · 2016–2018The era's defining Group-of-Five player — and an argument for why the playoff bracket should never have been four teams.
192 tackles · 53 TFL · 13.5 sacks · 1st DT to win Outland in '17
Oliver was the kind of recruit who shouldn't have been at Houston — five-star defensive tackle, the first the program had ever signed — and his three-year career (2016–2018) was the era's most consequential defensive tape played outside the Power-5. He won the Outland in 2017 as a sophomore, the first defensive tackle to do it. The Bills took him ninth overall in 2019. The Houston bowl-eligible seasons during his tenure are the program's Group-of-Five high-water mark, and the rest of the era's interior-line evaluation is graded against his tape.
