DeVonta Smith
Alabama Saban Era · 2018–2020First wide receiver to win the Heisman since Desmond Howard — and the only one to win it after catching the throw that won a national title.
2020 Heisman (1st WR since '91) · 3,965 career rec yds · 46 TD
Smith's 2020 — 1,856 receiving yards, 23 touchdowns, the Heisman, the title, the Mac Jones partnership that made the season look easier than it was — was the natural endpoint of an arc that began on second-and-26. He was 117 pounds when he committed to Alabama and 175 the week he won the trophy; the frame was always the argument against, the route-running was always the answer. The Slim Reaper nickname doesn't capture how much of the game was won at the line of scrimmage on releases against press, against bracket, against safeties who knew the ball was coming. He is the receiver every modern coordinator now tries to draft — the one who wins separation before the snap is fully arrived.
