Poach watch
This winter
Our poach model, on his record so far, the win chances for every game he has left, his program, his pay and his background. Ranked against the 132 FBS head coaches this season. The zone words describe the market’s interest; none of them says he is leaving.
What drives his number
The biggest factors in his profile, each against the typical FBS head coach today. The games he has left are priced into the number, not listed here.
- ▲ HigherHis team is 7-1, outscoring opponents by 26.1 points a game · AP-ranked
- ▼ LowerPaid $13.3 million in 2025, the 99th percentile of published FBS head-coach pay
- ▼ LowerAge 50 · coaching at his alma mater
How good is this number? It ranks a head coach who leaves for another head-coaching job ahead of one who stays 78 to 82% of the time, and its average came within a point of the share who actually left. What it can’t do
Tested on every FBS head coach from 2012 through 2025, each season scored by a model fit only on the seasons before it. From three games on, given one coach who left for a head-coaching job elsewhere or an NFL coordinator job and one who stayed, it ranked the one who left ahead 79 to 82% of the time; in a season’s first two games, 78%. Its average chance came within a point of the share who actually left. It counts a move a coach makes while he still holds the job; when his school ends it, that doesn’t count, even if another school then hires him.
- The live number prices the games he has left with the power model’s ratings from this season. The test priced them with each team’s rating from the season before, because ratings made during past seasons were not kept, so this live version could not be replayed.
- Programs new to FBS have no FBS record before this season in the data it reads, so their coaches are scored without one.
- It is frozen: it learns nothing from 2026 until a deliberate refit.
- A coach hired in December needs his background (age, alma mater, the state he was born in) added before his first game, or he shows as not rated.

Big games
The big-game ledger
How he does in the games that matter most — rivalry record, performance broken out by real opponent tier, one-score games, and his toughest historical matchup.
34-6 against his rivals. Just 1-5 against Nick Saban.
ATS is his record against the spread: did his team beat the closing betting line, winning by more than it or losing by less? Lines start in 2013; a dash means fewer than 6 of those games had one. One-score games carry no spread record: a big favorite that wins a close game has almost always failed to cover, so that number would say nothing about the coach.

How he plays
Run/pass mix, by field position
Ran more than the situation called for under Chaney; passed more under Bobo.
9,211 run and pass snaps at Georgia, 2016–2025, his own games, one row per offensive coordinator. Each cell is how much more often he passed than the rest of FBS did in the same situation (field zone, down, distance, score, quarter, same season), in percentage points.
Pass rate, stint by stint
Where each stint’s offense sat between run-first and pass-first, and how far it moved from one season to the next, against the FBS-wide average of 41% pass. The band is that stint’s real season-to-season range, not a fixed-width box.
Season-to-season pass-rate range for all 449 FBS coaching stints with at least three covered seasons, 2004–2025.
Building the roster
Five numbers on how he actually stocks a roster, from signing day to draft day.
His recruiting, really
His 9 ranked Georgia classes of his own have averaged #2 nationally — best #1, worst #6.
His class — he had the full signing cycle
Rank is each signing class’s national recruiting rank (#1 is best). Only a class he had a full signing cycle to build counts as his.
Roster ownership
Roster ownership
of his 2026 roster arrived on his watch — 129 of 129 players. Nobody is left from before he was hired.
Of his own players on this roster, 8% came through the transfer portal; the rest are non-portal arrivals (high-school signees, JUCO transfers, walk-ons).
This tenure spans the 2021 transfer-portal tracking floor: seasons before 2021 structurally cannot be classified portal-vs-not (they land in 'unknown' below), so the portal-share figure understates how many pre-2021 arrivals might have been transfers under the pre-portal-tracking transfer rules.
10% of his 246 new players since 2022 came through the portal (FBS programs, same seasons: 23%) — the 2nd-lowest share of the 68 Power 4 programs. His share was 2% in 2022 and 16% in 2026.
Graded on the players who arrived and the players who left together, his portal seasons came out worse than most FBS programs’ in all 5 seasons graded. our read
Each player counts once, in the season he arrived. 2021, the first season of portal tracking here, is left off because its arrival records look incomplete (about 31 new players per FBS team, against 52 in 2022). Portal grade: the site’s position-value-weighted scoring (the same engine as the Portal Heat feed and the “Who won the portal” grade): the value of the players who came in minus the value of the ones who left, ranked against every FBS program’s grade that same season. A season with fewer than 4 transfers in and out is not graded.
“His own” means the player arrived while he was head coach; “inherited” means a predecessor brought him in.
Size up front
Size up front
Offensive linemen on his Georgia rosters have averaged 9 lb heavier than the FBS average (2016–2026) — heavier than 93% of FBS coaching runs since 2010. In the three seasons before he arrived, Georgia’s line averaged within a few pounds of the FBS average.
Average listed weight of every offensive lineman on each season’s roster, holdovers included, against every FBS roster that season (2010 on; a program needs 3+ seasons under him to appear). Weights are the ones programs publish, and programs list differently. This describes size only — not scheme, and not quality.
Where he recruits
is his biggest recruiting state: 150 of 297 signees (51%) across his 2016–2026 tenure, drawn from 30 states in all. Next: FL (48).
77% of his signees come from GA and its 5 border states (FL 48, NC 12, TN 9, AL 7, SC 4).
Off this map: 19 signees to the west (CA 9, TX 5, others) and 6 to the north (CT, MA, others).

A pick counts toward his tenure when the player’s final college season was one he coached, a checkable rule rather than a claim about who developed the player. A blank note means the player is on a verified roster and arrived on his watch. “Estimated” means no roster record, so the final season is assumed to be the year before the draft.

In his own words
I do think that there was a big decision made when they did what they did to the rosters, and we debated with a lot of higher-up people to come to the roster limitations we came to
I don’t know that the players are any different
We’re in a league where it’s going to be brutal. It’s going to be tough, and the team that’s standing at the end is going to be the one that pushed through everything and persevered
It does seem different
I don’t know that the players are any different, I think about the teams we had in 2021 and 2022, how physical they were and how they practiced
At the end of the day, we pick it up. Everything we wanna do is in front of us
Yeah, tough one. We like to say the dogs don’t beat the dogs, but they found a way to beat themselves today
You want people to make good decisions and do things the right way, and Raylen certainly did there
If we play like did in the second half, hell no.
taking the extra mile to do the extra things, the little things after practice. I’ve seen that from him. He’s been doing that consistently. So he knows that his time is very limited, just like the rest of us. So he’s been taking that role very seriously.
Leadership in that room, I think he takes personal ownership and energy
Pass (protection) and pass receiving becoming a weapon

I’ve had questions about expansion, more SEC games, portal, college and federal legislation to navigate the NIL era we’re in. Players leaving, coaches leaving. That’s all people want to talk about
They said, ‘OK, who’s going to be in the front of the boat?'
So I would love to see — and I don’t make this an excuse — but I would love to see the flow of the season go like a football, a week to week, maybe a bye week in there, but a continuous thing
We have not had our best performances when we needed them most, and I don’t want it blame it on that
Alabama and Auburn are great programs and have a ton of respect. I’ve been apart of those games a ton–as coach at Georgia I think I’ve played them over half the years I’ve been here by way of SEC Championships too
We study successful programs all the time. If you’re not studying how other people are doing it and you’re just fixated on your own team and your own roster, I think you’re missing out
We’re praying for him and his family
I’ve been a huge advocate that if we can’t find rules that everybody plays by, then we should play our own
I’m not advocating that they make less money. I’m fine with what student-athletes make
My biggest concern for our sport is we’re going to ruin all the other sports
Our best Alabama teams — I’m gonna go 2012, 13, 14, 15 — would beat the dog out of all these teams right now
There’s an Indiana, there’s a Michigan, but relative, [roster talent] is going down

Where we are right now with 12 teams, I don’t necessarily agree that it needs to quit being played
Yep, he’s great. He’s practicing. He had a little off-season injury in our workouts, but he’s fine now
All doing a great job
