Why his number is where it is
Our hot-seat model, on his record so far, the win chances for every game he has left, and his contract (a bigger buyout, relative to pay, makes a change costlier). Ranked against the 132 FBS head coaches with 3+ games this season.
Now right where 2025 was at this point.
His hot seat, week by week
The chance he’s out by the end of that season, as it stood after every week of his tenure here, by today’s model.
Earlier seasons price the games left with power ratings rebuilt after those seasons ended.
What drives his number
The biggest factors, each against the typical FBS job today.
- ▲ Hotter5-8 over his previous season here
- ▲ Hotter$2.5M buyout · 2.5× his pay, a multiple below average in FBS — cheap to move on
- ▼ CoolerYear 2 · tenure, which this model overrates
(why?)
Tenure is one of this model’s strongest inputs, but its weight was set when retirements like Nick Saban’s and Bob Stoops’ still counted as being pushed out, so it overstates how much tenure matters.
What happened to coaches like him, 2004–2025
A different comparison: past coaches, not today’s, grouped by one fact at a time. Neither line knows the games he has left or his contract, so they can sit above or below his chance.
- Were 5-3 after 8 games
- 5% pushed out over results · of 502 coaches
- Were in year 2, after 8 games
- 5% pushed out over results · of 469 coaches
How good is this number? Checked on every FBS coach from 2010 to 2025, with its percentages calibrated each season on earlier years only: they track what happened — coaches it put near 25% were out about a quarter of the time — and a version pricing the games left with the previous season’s ratings ranked jobs as well as the ranking this page used before. Each week it learns from coaches who were still on the job at that point, so a firing during the season counts. In the Boiling zone it has run a few points high. Every job, and the method.

Poach watch
This winter
Our poach model, on his record so far, the win chances for every game he has left, his program, his pay and his background. Ranked against the 132 FBS head coaches this season. The zone words describe the market’s interest; none of them says he is leaving.
What drives his number
The biggest factors in his profile, each against the typical FBS head coach today. The games he has left are priced into the number, not listed here.
- ▲ HigherAge 46 · neither at his alma mater nor in the state he was born in
- ▼ Lower5-8 over his previous season here
- ▲ HigherPaid $1 million in 2025, the 25th percentile of published FBS head-coach pay
How good is this number? It ranks a head coach who leaves for another head-coaching job ahead of one who stays 78 to 82% of the time, and its average came within a point of the share who actually left. What it can’t do
Tested on every FBS head coach from 2012 through 2025, each season scored by a model fit only on the seasons before it. From three games on, given one coach who left for a head-coaching job elsewhere or an NFL coordinator job and one who stayed, it ranked the one who left ahead 79 to 82% of the time; in a season’s first two games, 78%. Its average chance came within a point of the share who actually left. It counts a move a coach makes while he still holds the job; when his school ends it, that doesn’t count, even if another school then hires him.
- The live number prices the games he has left with the power model’s ratings from this season. The test priced them with each team’s rating from the season before, because ratings made during past seasons were not kept, so this live version could not be replayed.
- Programs new to FBS have no FBS record before this season in the data it reads, so their coaches are scored without one.
- It is frozen: it learns nothing from 2026 until a deliberate refit.
- A coach hired in December needs his background (age, alma mater, the state he was born in) added before his first game, or he shows as not rated.

Stats
Big games
The big-game ledger
How he does in the games that matter most — rivalry record, performance broken out by real opponent tier, one-score games, and his toughest historical matchup.
3-4 against his rivals. Winless in 3 tries against Clay Helton.
ATS is his record against the spread: did his team beat the closing betting line, winning by more than it or losing by less? Lines start in 2013; a dash means fewer than 6 of those games had one. One-score games carry no spread record: a big favorite that wins a close game has almost always failed to cover, so that number would say nothing about the coach.

Tags describe each game; they aren’t scores. The weighting that picks these games is still being tested.
How he plays
Run/pass mix, by field position
Called about what the situation called for.
906 run and pass snaps at App State, 2025–2025, his own games, one row per offensive coordinator. Each cell is how much more often he passed than the rest of FBS did in the same situation (field zone, down, distance, score, quarter, same season), in percentage points.
Pass rate, stint by stint
Where each stint’s offense sat between run-first and pass-first, and how far it moved from one season to the next, against the FBS-wide average of 41% pass. The band is that stint’s real season-to-season range, not a fixed-width box.
Building the roster
Three numbers on how he actually stocks a roster, from signing day to draft day.
His recruiting, really
His one ranked App State class of his own finished #59 nationally.
His class — he had the full signing cycleTransition — he was hired mid-cycle
Rank is each signing class’s national recruiting rank (#1 is best). Only a class he had a full signing cycle to build counts as his; inherited and mid-transition classes still show here, faded, but stay out of the average.
Roster ownership
Roster ownership
of his 2026 roster arrived on his watch — 117 of 164 players. The other 47 are holdovers from before he was hired.
Of his own players on this roster, 37% came through the transfer portal; the rest are non-portal arrivals (high-school signees, JUCO transfers, walk-ons).
Everyone he has brought in, 2025–2026Counting players who have since left: 40% of the 134 arrivals we can classify came through the portal.
“His own” means the player arrived while he was head coach; “inherited” means a predecessor brought him in.
Where he recruits
is his biggest recruiting state: 11 of 46 signees (24%) across his 2025–2026 tenure, drawn from 12 states in all. Next: FL (9).
83% of his signees come from GA and its 5 border states (FL 9, NC 9, SC 7, AL 1, TN 1).
Off this map: 2 signees to the west (CA, KS) and 2 to the north (IN, OH).

In his own words
I want to thank our student section, they were awesome the whole game, they stayed the whole game, played every play with us
It’s a rivalry, they beat us twice last year and I think if you asked our older fans, this is the one they dislike the most, I dislike Coastal, JMU and these guys equally
They have an experienced quarterback, which makes a huge difference, their wide receivers are catching the football very well and they’re really good with contested catches
They are well coached and coach Helton has done a good job for a long time. So I think when you tie all that stuff together, they’re a team that’s not going to beat themselves
I never was in doubt at all
I think the run game took a step in the right direction, still not where we need to be. It takes 11 guys to have an efficient run on offense and we haven’t done that with great success this year
We’ll see how the week goes. With the injury report it’s a competitive advantage. We’ll go as the week flows
I think it is really difficult when the players around them are really good as well. You’re talking about a team that’s undefeated, that’s statistically very good on all three phases and so schematically you have to know who is on the field
We did everything you can to get ready for a rain game as far as wet balls and all those other things
Deuce is a different player. This guy got some Houdini qualities: He’s able to escape, he’s making jump passes; it’s fun to watch. It’s also something to get ready for. I feel good about where we’re at as a defensive squad
They’ve got a corner, Travis Roman, and their pass rusher is as good as anyone we’ve seen on tape this year. You better have a plan when you have those two elite players at the first level and third level of your defense
Obviously disappointed with that game
He wasn’t able to go into the game, so we’ll have to do that work, an MRI and all that stuff
There are no moral victories, and we’re not content with what happened
I think they’re playing better than what people think they are
The system’s been built around number three
We have to be better running the football
There’s a special blood kinship that you walk together forever when you win a championship
Really proud of how our players responded to a bunch of adversity
He has the pencil last; he can fix other people’s mistakes, no one fixes his
I think it starts in the trenches. We have a good rotation of defensive linemen and edge players that make it easier on the back end
Really excited about the way we played; I like how hard our guys played
When three has the ball in his hands, you feel good about being able to call your stuff
Great kid, great kid, plays through injuries, tough as nails and he’s impacted our defense and our team
I think we have a bunch of good receivers. Sam has probably the most production as far as statistics go, but it also helps Loft and Nate, Jackson Grier and Alex Sanchez, who are playing well for us
This is a big game for us
The whole week we talked about the movie ‘The Gladiator.’ We showed it on the bus trip down, and we knew there was a lot of outside noise, but we knew the men in the arena would win the game
Obviously we celebrate for 24 hours, but it is time to put it to bed
We’ve got a huge instate rivalry on the road that we’re going to work really hard to get and really excited about
We’re excited to go on the road. You got to prove that you can win on the road. Going into a hostile environment, two teams that don’t like each other very much and you’re dealing with different conditions
We were gonna play a lot of people early. I didn’t think I did a good job of that last year
We’re really excited to be able to open this game at home versus an opponent that’s got a really rich tradition of winning
You have to lead to your own authentic self. Colton sacrificed a lot to get to the point he’s at right now
The players know the guys who play well, and for us to have a quarterback unanimously voted as one of the team captains was a big deal for us
I think coach Stevens has done a really good job; he played defensive line, and I think the strength of their team is their defensive line
Been a really good summer
Malachi came in here and did a really good job and earned the team’s respect and was a unanimous captain and played really well
We did a big study on the Seahawks, because I think they played four Thursday night games, and they were pretty successful last year in these things
The biggest thing it does for our football program is it creates competition
