Poach watch
This winter
Our poach model, on his record so far, the win chances for every game he has left, his program, his pay and his background. Ranked against the 132 FBS head coaches this season. The zone words describe the market’s interest; none of them says he is leaving.
What drives his number
The biggest factors in his profile, each against the typical FBS head coach today. The games he has left are priced into the number, not listed here.
- ▼ LowerHis first season at UCLA
- ▲ HigherNo record for him here before this season · his first year in the job
- ▲ HigherHis team is 8-0, outscoring opponents by 20.1 points a game · AP-ranked
How good is this number? It ranks a head coach who leaves for another head-coaching job ahead of one who stays 78 to 82% of the time, and its average came within a point of the share who actually left. What it can’t do
Tested on every FBS head coach from 2012 through 2025, each season scored by a model fit only on the seasons before it. From three games on, given one coach who left for a head-coaching job elsewhere or an NFL coordinator job and one who stayed, it ranked the one who left ahead 79 to 82% of the time; in a season’s first two games, 78%. Its average chance came within a point of the share who actually left. It counts a move a coach makes while he still holds the job; when his school ends it, that doesn’t count, even if another school then hires him.
- The live number prices the games he has left with the power model’s ratings from this season. The test priced them with each team’s rating from the season before, because ratings made during past seasons were not kept, so this live version could not be replayed.
- Programs new to FBS have no FBS record before this season in the data it reads, so their coaches are scored without one.
- It is frozen: it learns nothing from 2026 until a deliberate refit.
- A coach hired in December needs his background (age, alma mater, the state he was born in) added before his first game, or he shows as not rated.

ATS is his record against the spread: did his team beat the closing betting line, winning by more than it or losing by less? Lines start in 2013; a dash means fewer than 6 of those games had one. One-score games carry no spread record: a big favorite that wins a close game has almost always failed to cover, so that number would say nothing about the coach.

Of his own players on this roster, 55% came through the transfer portal; the rest are non-portal arrivals (high-school signees, JUCO transfers, walk-ons).

UCLA’s going to extend Bob Chesney
UCLA is going to extend Bob Chesney. That’s in the works.
In his own words
I’ve said it before, this is the greatest place in the world to play football and it’s the greatest place in the world to coach football
When someone goes down and someone has to step up, I say it every single time… you’re either exposed or you’re revealed
Nothing, he just got stepped on is what it looked like out there
I’ve never looked at the odds of what a game is or what any of that stuff is
We can’t try to be something different
We’ve been talking about this for a very long time
When you see it, it’s certainly egregious
He threw some really nice, accurate footballs – catchable footballs
He stepped up in the moment where we need him to. At the same point in time, he commanded the offense very, very well. What got him there is we’re looking at this on a week-to-week basis. And he had a really good week of practice. He did a really good job, and he brings a lot to the table.
I didn’t see it because it was on their sideline, but when you see it, it’s certainly egregious
Our guys did a really good job
It was a big part of it, and we didn’t have to bring a whole lot more than the four
Ultimately, they’re very similar
He (Johnson) can catch everything in his general vicinity
They’re both very, very good football players. You can’t really think one way or the other who’s going to be out there and who’s not
We’re capable of that complementary game of football
That’s a position where you’re trying to take hits of guys
Some of it came off of play action game
The quarterback (Browne) and his timing with the receivers – the routes they ran, the precision and the places he put it – couldn’t really get much pressure
We got to start much, much faster
They’re either going to be revealed for the work they’ve done up to this point, or they’re going to be exposed for the work they did not do
We need this community to come out and support at a level that they’ve never done in the past bunch of years
This is a game that you have to play with some emotion
I really like where we’re sitting
I think you got to fight and scratch and claw for everything that you got, and you got to bring these kids together as quickly as you possibly can that maybe never played together before, and with coaches that maybe never coached together before
We are excited to welcome Derek to our program
Ultimately, procedural discipline was a big part of what we want to make sure we’re constantly talking about
He’s a complete back
