Why his number is where it is
Our hot-seat model, on his record so far, the win chances for every game he has left, and his contract (a bigger buyout, relative to pay, makes a change costlier). Ranked against the 132 FBS head coaches with 3+ games this season.
Now hotter than at this point in 2025.
His hot seat, week by week
The chance he’s out by the end of that season, as it stood after every week of his tenure here, by today’s model.
Hottest: 2023, week 10 (39%, 6th-hottest of 133 FBS jobs that week). Top factor: ▲ Hotter 2-8, outscored by 95
Earlier seasons price the games left with power ratings rebuilt after those seasons ended.
What drives his number
The biggest factors, each against the typical FBS job today.
- ▲ Hotter3-5, outscored by 60
- ▲ HotterYear 6 · tenure, which this model overrates
(why?)
Tenure is one of this model’s strongest inputs, but its weight was set when retirements like Nick Saban’s and Bob Stoops’ still counted as being pushed out, so it overstates how much tenure matters.
- ▼ CoolerRegional Program program · the bar going in
What happened to coaches like him, 2004–2025
A different comparison: past coaches, not today’s, grouped by one fact at a time. Neither line knows the games he has left or his contract, so they can sit above or below his chance.
- Were 3-5 after 8 games
- 18% pushed out over results · of 379 coaches
- Were in years 5-9, after 8 games
- 14% pushed out over results · of 700 coaches
How good is this number? Checked on every FBS coach from 2010 to 2025, with its percentages calibrated each season on earlier years only: they track what happened — coaches it put near 25% were out about a quarter of the time — and a version pricing the games left with the previous season’s ratings ranked jobs as well as the ranking this page used before. Each week it learns from coaches who were still on the job at that point, so a firing during the season counts. In the Boiling zone it has run a few points high. Every job, and the method.

Big games
The big-game ledger
How he does in the games that matter most — rivalry record, performance broken out by real opponent tier, one-score games, and his toughest historical matchup.
2-8 against his rivals. Winless in 4 tries against Kirby Smart.
ATS is his record against the spread: did his team beat the closing betting line, winning by more than it or losing by less? Lines start in 2013; a dash means fewer than 6 of those games had one. One-score games carry no spread record: a big favorite that wins a close game has almost always failed to cover, so that number would say nothing about the coach.
Signature games

Tags describe each game; they aren’t scores. The weighting that picks these games is still being tested.
How he plays
Run/pass mix, by field position
Called about what the situation called for under every play-caller.
3,861 run and pass snaps at Vanderbilt, 2021–2025, his own games, one row per offensive coordinator. Each cell is how much more often he passed than the rest of FBS did in the same situation (field zone, down, distance, score, quarter, same season), in percentage points.
Pass rate, stint by stint
Where each stint’s offense sat between run-first and pass-first, and how far it moved from one season to the next, against the FBS-wide average of 41% pass. The band is that stint’s real season-to-season range, not a fixed-width box.
Season-to-season pass-rate range for all 449 FBS coaching stints with at least three covered seasons, 2004–2025.
Building the roster
Five numbers on how he actually stocks a roster, from signing day to draft day.
His recruiting, really
His 5 ranked Vanderbilt classes of his own have averaged #47 nationally — best #32, worst #76.
His class — he had the full signing cycleTransition — he was hired mid-cycle
Rank is each signing class’s national recruiting rank (#1 is best). Only a class he had a full signing cycle to build counts as his; inherited and mid-transition classes still show here, faded, but stay out of the average.
Roster ownership
Roster ownership
of his 2026 roster arrived on his watch — 116 of 117 players. The other 1 is a holdover from before he was hired.
Of his own players on this roster, 18% came through the transfer portal; the rest are non-portal arrivals (high-school signees, JUCO transfers, walk-ons).
24% of his 237 new players since 2022 came through the portal (FBS programs, same seasons: 23%). His share was 11% in 2022 and 27% in 2026.
Graded on the players who arrived and the players who left together, his portal seasons came out better than most FBS programs’ in 2 and worse than most in 3 of the 5 seasons graded. our read
Each player counts once, in the season he arrived. 2021, the first season of portal tracking here, is left off because its arrival records look incomplete (about 31 new players per FBS team, against 52 in 2022). Portal grade: the site’s position-value-weighted scoring (the same engine as the Portal Heat feed and the “Who won the portal” grade): the value of the players who came in minus the value of the ones who left, ranked against every FBS program’s grade that same season. A season with fewer than 4 transfers in and out is not graded.
“His own” means the player arrived while he was head coach; “inherited” means a predecessor brought him in.
Size up front
Size up front
Offensive linemen on his Vanderbilt rosters have averaged 6 lb heavier than the FBS average (2021–2026) — heavier than 83% of FBS coaching runs since 2010. In the three seasons before he arrived, Vanderbilt’s line averaged 4 lb heavier than the FBS average.
Average listed weight of every offensive lineman on each season’s roster, holdovers included, against every FBS roster that season (2010 on; a program needs 3+ seasons under him to appear). Weights are the ones programs publish, and programs list differently. This describes size only — not scheme, and not quality.
Where he recruits
is his biggest recruiting state: 21 of 130 signees (16%) across his 2021–2026 tenure, drawn from 27 states in all. Next: GA (19).
47% of his signees come from TN and its 8 border states (GA 19, AL 10, MS 6, KY 2, AR 1, MO 1, NC 1).
Off this map: 4 signees to the west (CA 2, AZ, others).
- median hometown distance
- 420 mi
- within 100 mi
- 14%
- within 500 mi

The map counts signed recruits across his tenure; the distance figures cover his current roster, transfers and walk-ons included. Two different groups, kept separate on purpose.
The NFL pipeline
The NFL pipeline
players drafted into the NFL off his teams here. He brought in 2 of them himself.
| Year | Pick | Player | Pos | NFL team | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | R2.22 | Eli Stowers | Tight End | Philadelphia Eagles | |
| 2025 | R7.35 | Julian Ashby | Long Snapper | New England Patriots |
A pick counts toward his tenure when the player’s final college season was one he coached, a checkable rule rather than a claim about who developed the player. A blank note means the player is on a verified roster and arrived on his watch. “Estimated” means no roster record, so the final season is assumed to be the year before the draft.

In his own words
[We had a] tough result Saturday and we’re feeling all of the effects of that
I appreciate the way our team responded today
We had our best ever day speed-wise today
There were things that we can take from the Georgia performance and build upon
And there were things that we need to turn the page on. [I] thought we played better in the front, I thought we were able to create space in the run game. The game honors toughness, so when you play the right way and play with detail, even those that might have been gritty runs on Saturday, eventually they become the breakouts.
[Part of] the effectiveness on Saturday was we did a better job of staying in rhythm
[Curtis] was able to practice today and from my vantage point, was able to do that without much limitation
I actually see [his injury] as part of his development, [and] an important part of his development
We’re going to look to the positives to continue to build to find out what this team can be
We didn’t play well enough on the road to win against a good team today and that’s why we feel the way we feel.
First of all, coming out of the game Saturday, just this feeling of the need for detail engagement
We’ve addressed the personnel specifically on the punt unit, and Jeff LePak’s doing a nice job of trying to tighten down
We need to win the margins, we need to win three phases, and special teams becomes an important part of that
He’s developing as a player
This kid is mentally tough
This guy’s got a great heart
I respect the way they play the game in all three phases
There’s work to do in all three phases, but we [have] to strengthen our special teams play
We got away with one on Saturday
I think this is the first time in the history of college football there’s been a field goal block called on minus whatever yard line
The other thing that I showed them was just the ESPN win probabilities. I mean, it was 99.9% [for NC State]
Jared [Curtis], he’s got the ability to both see it, but also, he’s got the arm talent to really go from tick mark to tick marks. And I think that puts stress on a defense
I trust structure. When I see a lack of structure, that makes me anxious. This is an issue. We’ve gotta fix it, and good teams will expose you that way
Jared Curtis will start for us this weekend against North Carolina State. So he’s earned it. He’s worked really hard
What [Curtis] showed on Saturday was that he is ready for this now… we’re not sacrificing wins now for wins later, [Curtis] can do it now
There is no flinch in him. He’s going to bet on himself… [and] his teammates
We’re gonna need Blaze [Berlowitz] as the year goes on. I’m very confident in him as a number two
At times [we put the] offense in a disadvantaged position rather than taking points or punting the ball, and so I think I’ve got to help get these three units synced up and complementary
NC State will be the most challenging opponent that we’ve faced [so far]
We were four- for- five [in the red zone] with four touchdowns
I want to see Blaze have opportunities to go out and make plays
We have to call [Blaze] into those throws
I think, in general, we need to get explosive offensively
[We are] continuing to develop both guys and give them opportunities, and [we’re] really learning from our first time doing this
I’m working towards some clarity in my own mind
[Curtis] wants to play
This is just about the Austin Peay game
I see growth in Jared [Curtis] and Blaze [Berlowitz] continues to do things that he does well
We won’t replicate Diego
Now it’s their turn
The mission’s winning, so this is about how we best position our program to win… we have to evaluate all possibilities and put the best person on the field that’s going to help us win
I am grateful the DI Cabinet approved the FBS Oversight Committee’s recommendation to impose significant penalties on head coaches and programs who circumvent transfer rules, along with immediate accountability
