What each fanbase carries into this one.
North Dakota
The chipThe chip is never being the dominant program in your own state, never winning the in-state trophy, and now watching the one rival that made the game worth playing leave for a bigger stage. If North Dakota can't beat North Dakota State at the FCS level, how does it compete when NDSU has moved on to the FBS?
What this game touches
The Nickel Trophy, retired after 2003 -- and the series interrupted twice. North Dakota and North Dakota State played under the Nickel Trophy for decades in Division II, a trophy that was retired after 2003 when both programs pursued the FCS reclassification that ultimately split them. When they reunited in the MVFC in 2020, the trophy remained retired and now sits in the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck. The wound is not losing the rivalry but watching it be defined by realignment: shelved in 2004 when NDSU first left, restored without trophy in 2015, and now ending again as NDSU departs for the Mountain West in 2026.
Nebraska
The chip · vs the national mediaThe take that Nebraska is a museum — a great history and a hollow present, coasting on a sellout streak and 1990s highlights. The fanbase answers with the streak itself: still there, still full, still waiting.
What this game touches
The fall from the '90s — and the Raiola defection. Nebraska's 1990s dynasty (three titles in four years, a 60-3 run) gave way to a quarter-century of decline; the 2025 team went 7-5, and the franchise QB the program built around — legacy recruit Dylan Raiola — broke his leg, then transferred to Oregon, the latest gut-punch for the most loyal fanbase in the sport.

Nebraska is worth +5.4 points (±4.0) more at home than on the road since 2018 — top third of FBS, 70th percentile.
47% at home, 26% on the road against FBS opponents (23–26 home, 10–28 away).
Our model gives every stadium the same flat 2.3-point home edge (why); the books use about 3. Against the closing line this stadium reads -0.1 at home vs. away over 70 games — inside the ±7.4 noise, so the flat number is the honest one here.
Night kickoff — historically worth about half a point more to the home side against the number, and not much more than that. The visitors travel about 490 miles to get here.
