The 2025 Road-Warrior Championship Run
since 2025
Program outlook
The 2025 season is the defining moment of the Brock Spack era at Illinois State. The centerpiece was the December 6, 2025, upset of #1-seeded North Dakota State, 29-28, in the second round.
Since Oct 9: W 35-14 at Southern Illinois; W 17-10 vs Indiana State; W 35-14 vs Murray State. 7-2 this season.
But the championship game was heartbreak. Illinois State scored first in overtime (Rittenhouse to Dylan Lord), but the extra point was blocked. Montana State responded when QB Justin Lamson connected with Taco Dowler on fourth down, and the kick was good.
The next championship run will carry that weight—but it will also carry the knowledge that the Redbirds belong on the sport's biggest stages.
Defending that run has been uneven. Through October 3 the Redbirds are 4-2: they beat St. Francis (IL) 76-0, Eastern Illinois 49-13 and, on the road, Western Illinois 41-10 and Northern Illinois 28-24, but lost 28-21 at Northern Iowa as a heavy favorite and then 31-14 at home to South Dakota State.
The Redbirds are unseeded giant-killers rooted in MVFC toughness, execution-oriented football, and the belief that coaching longevity and institutional trust matter more than annual recruiting rank.
