THE LONG WAIT · 2025

The Wisconsin Standard

The WIAC is the University of Wisconsin system at the DIII level — UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout, UW-River Falls, UW-Eau Claire — all competing within one of DIII football's most physical conferences. UW-Whitewater has won six DIII national championships. UW-Oshkosh has won two. The WIAC has produced more DIII national championships per conference than any other league outside of the OAC.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh have split the last eight WIAC titles. Does UW-La Crosse or UW-Platteville emerge as a third contender in 2026, or does the conference's two-program structure hold?

Three Things to Watch

The DynastyUW-Whitewater: Six National Championships

UW-Whitewater has won six DIII national championships — five under Lance Leipold before he left for FBS, and one after. Their Warhawks recruit across Wisconsin and the Chicago suburbs, developing players through a system that has produced NFL players from every position group. The program's culture survived Leipold's departure because the infrastructure — coaching staff, player development, game planning — is embedded at every level. They enter 2026 as the WIAC's standard and the DIII bracket's most experienced program.

The RivalUW-Oshkosh: Two Titles, Consistent Competition

UW-Oshkosh won the DIII national championship in 2018 and 2023, breaking the Whitewater monopoly twice in five years. Their program draws from the Fox Valley corridor — Appleton, Neenah, Oshkosh — and competes with a physical running style that matches the WIAC's identity. When Oshkosh's line wins, they are the most dangerous team in the DIII bracket — a program that has proven they can beat anyone when healthy.

Wild CardUW-La Crosse: The Dark Horse

UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Wisconsin has won WIAC titles and appeared in the DIII bracket multiple times without earning the national attention that Whitewater and Oshkosh get. Their program draws from western Wisconsin and the Mississippi River corridor, competing with a style built on their offensive system's efficiency rather than physical dominance. In a year when both Whitewater and Oshkosh struggle, La Crosse is the most likely WIAC champion.
