How fan mood is read

Fan mood compares what Illinois fans wrote in r/CFB game threads with every FBS fanbase with enough talk that week. A week runs Monday to Sunday and is named for the game in it. The read is redrawn 300 times from the same commenters, re-ranking every fanbase each time. Sour or all in means the read sat in the bottom or top fifth in at least 70 of every 100 draws; on the sour side or on the bright side, in the bottom or top two fifths in at least 80; anything less settled is middle of the pack. A bright label also needs more positive talk than negative, and a sour one the reverse. Brighter or sourer than usual compares the week with the team's own earlier weeks, after taking out how every fanbase read that week. Each dot sits at the read's rank that week. A week read before these labels keeps the word it was first given, the fifth it sat in (sour, uneasy, mixed, hopeful or all in). Season averages are the mean of a season's reads, in fifths from sour to all in, and seasons before 2026 were read from each week's wider talk, so a comparison across seasons is rough.

Bielema is already making Illinois everything I’ve asked them to be, and I’m not going to let Indiana tripping over a diamond in Cignetti make me not appreciate that.

What fans are saying

fans believe the team’s defense is terrible

On Saturday I watch my orange and blue football team be forced to score a million touchdowns to keep up with the ass defense.

The crazy thing is even teams like SIU are going for 4th and 2 against Illinois because they know defense is ass and they have a legit shot to get new set of downs.

fans believe Illinois should have kicked field goals for points

I actually like the aggressiveness on offense, as long as the defense tries to get after them and get the safety. If you’re gonna sit back, take the field goal.

Just kick the god damn field goal. What are you doing.

I'd trust Jordan Anderson carrying a new born on 3rd down. Dude always comes up clutch

I hate watching teams with shit defense. Gonna be a long year

The defensive unit is in shambles holy shit.

fans argue the team’s recent performance doesn’t match its ranking

Sadly I’ve watched it my whole life haha. And I do realize this is a relatively good period for this team. But to see them be ranked so high and now be where they’re at is disappointing.

This team doesn’t deserve to be ranked, I’m so embarrassed

One fan argues the playcalling is too predictable

Our defense is so easy to beat, OCs think theres gonna be some wild 5d chess move at the end that they get too cute with playcalling.

One fan believes developing the freshman quarterback ensures long-term success

We're not great this year so I would rather get a promising freshman some real experience than go 7-5 with houser just to have a new quarterback again next year

player performanceOne fan's take

One fan believes Illinois’s defense is giving up too many points

It’s been 2 days and I’m still shocked at how sloppy the defense is. They seemingly eat a touchdown on every single drive.

schedule expectationOne fan's take that season

One fan believes winning at least half their games is a reasonable goal

I absolutely disagree. We don’t have Michigan, Penn State, or Oregon on the schedule this year and the best we can do is 8 wins? Really?
