What’s at stake

Hampton

  • Hampton is coming off a 45-point win.

Campbell

  • Campbell football is one of the youngest programs in the FCS -- reinstated in 2008 after a 58-year absence, the Fighting Camels are still chasing their first conference title and first playoff berth. Three consecutive winning seasons (2017-2019) remain the modern program's high point as it enters 2026 under third-year coach Braxton Harris.

What each fanbase carries into this one.

Campbell

The chip

Campbell has spent since 2008 doing the hardest thing in the sport -- rebuilding a program from a 58-year absence with no scholarships at first -- and climbed two classification levels to reach the CAA. Fans feel like that climb doesn't get any credit next to programs that never had to restart from zero, especially while the win column still lags.

Hampton

The chip · vs the blue bloods

The fanbase says Hampton earned its titles when championships were won on the field and that the move to the CAA is proof they're willing to compete at the highest FCS level — they believe the talent pipeline from Hampton Roads and HBCU recruiting can produce a winner anywhere.

What this game touches

The CAA transition and the 2024-2025 collapse. Hampton left the MEAC — where it won championships and HBCU titles — for the Big South and then the CAA. The 2025 season produced a 2-10 record (0-8 CAA), the program's worst mark in memory. Head coach Trenton Boykin is in his second year trying to rebuild a roster that has struggled to compete at the CAA level after leaving the HBCU conference ecosystem.

Conditions

Home-field advantage: Strong
