Villanova reinvented itself from dormancy in 1985 under Andy Talley, who spent 32 years building a program on precision and academic rigor. That investment paid off on December 18, 2009, when the Wildcats defeated an undefeated Montana team 23–21 for the FCS National Championship—making Villanova the lowest-seeded team ever to win the title at that time, and the only program to claim both an FCS football championship and an NCAA Division I men's basketball championship.

For the next 16 seasons, the program sustained competitive excellence within the Coastal Athletic Association, establishing itself as a reliable playoff contender. The 2025 season exemplified this consistency: the Wildcats finished 12–3, placed second in the CAA, and advanced to the FCS playoff semifinals before falling to Illinois State 30–14. It was a season of clear competence and upward trajectory.

Yet Villanova football will never own the narrative at the university. Basketball—with multiple NCAA titles and sustained Big East prominence—commands the campus identity. Rather than resist this reality, Villanova football has embraced it, building a program defined by academic standing and disciplined athletics within its own sphere. The 2026 move to the Patriot League reflects this self-knowledge: a shift away from a geographically sprawling FCS conference and into a peer set of academically first institutions that align with the university's core mission.

The question now is whether the Patriot League represents a new beginning for Villanova football or a ceiling made explicit. The first answer was a jolt: a 35-32 home loss to old CAA colleague William & Mary as a 12.5-point favorite in the opener. Early answers, it turns out, can sting.
