What’s at stake

Cal Poly

  • Cal Poly football is a Central Coast program with real history — a 1980 NCAA Division II national championship, three straight Buck Buchanan Award winners (2004-2006, tied with Montana for the most in FCS history), and alumni in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame (John Madden, Bobby Beathard) — now trying to find its footing again. The Mustangs haven't posted a winning season since 2016 and enter 2026 under their third head coach since 2020, Tim Skipper, hired December 2025.

Central Washington

  • A win would be one of Central Washington’s biggest of the season — a 76-spot gap in the power ratings.

Central Washington

The chip · vs big brother

Fans here believe for 70 years, CWU was a GNAC power. When the conference died, the assumption was that the Wildcats were too regional, too small, too Pacific-Northwest for the modern game. The 2025 LSC championship was the answer: the mountain came to Texas and won.

What this game touches

The 2021 GNAC shutdown — forced reinvention. The Great Northwest Athletic Conference dropped football after 2021, erasing a 70-year home. Central Washington had to migrate to the Lone Star Conference as a football-only member in 2022, an exile from the Pacific Northwest and the assumption that the Wildcats would spend years rebuilding in a new league.

Cal Poly

The chip

There isn't a rival Cal Poly measures itself against out of resentment so much as a quiet frustration with itself -- a program with a Hall of Fame coaching alumnus and a real (if small-division) national title in its history that hasn't found stability on the field in nearly a decade.

What this game touches

The Post-2016 Drought. Cal Poly's last winning season was 2016 (7-5, an FCS playoff berth). Since then the program has cycled through three head coaches in six years -- Beau Baldwin (4-21, 2020-2022), Paul Wulff (10-24, 2023-2025) -- without ever getting back to .500, let alone contending in the Big Sky.
