Grambling

Grambling State University is an HBCU founded in 1946, but its legend arrives with a single name: Eddie Robinson. On October 5, 1985, Robinson became the all-time wins leader in college football, surpassing Bear Bryant. When he retired, that record stood as the highest ever achieved in the sport.

In 1974, Robinson recruited a quarterback from Louisiana named Doug Williams. Williams was drafted by Tampa Bay in the first round in 1978. Years later, on January 31, 1988, Williams made history: he became the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl.

But the decades since Robinson's retirement have been a slow reclamation. No winning season since 2019. The Robinson era feels mythic now—a golden age that shaped the program's identity but also cast a shadow. Enter Mickey Joseph, in his second year as head coach. Instead, it ended with a 28-27 heartbreak in the Bayou Classic against Southern—the annual rivalry played in New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome, where the Battle of the Bands (Grambling's World-Famed Tiger Marching Band versus Southern's Human Jukebox) is sometimes as iconic as the football game itself.

The question for 2026 is whether 2025 was the beginning of something sustained or another false start. Joseph has been extended through 2027 with option years, signaling institutional commitment. Grambling's fanbase expects nothing less than a return to SWAC championships—not because they're delusional, but because they remember what the program built and what it proved. The weight of 408 wins and a Super Bowl victory is not a burden; it is a compass.
