North Dakota State's 2014–2025 record is 147-17. The era is still being written; the CFP line is the one the program is arguing for.

Program outlook

North Dakota State won ten national championships in fourteen seasons. Then it lost the last game it will ever play in the FCS — and left for the FBS anyway.

Ten titles. Fourteen seasons. Four different head coaches. Nobody at any level of college football has run anything like it. North Dakota State built the streak in a dome in Fargo, North Dakota, on the strength of a quarterback pipeline that reads like a Madden roster — Brock Jensen to Carson Wentz to Easton Stick to Trey Lance to Cam Miller to Cole Payton — and sent multiple first-round picks to the NFL from a program most of the country still can't place on a map.

The ending wasn't supposed to look like this. North Dakota State entered the 2025 FCS playoffs 12-0, the top seed, the presumptive favorite for an eleventh banner. Illinois State beat them at home in the second round, 29-28, with Cole Payton playing through a broken thumb. It was the last game the Bison will ever play in the FCS, and they didn't get to leave on their own terms.

What came next was already in motion: North Dakota State joined the Mountain West as a football-only FBS member for 2026, paying $5 million to the NCAA and $12.5 million to the conference, with head coach Tim Polasek — who'd won a title in his very first season, 2024 — signed to a 7-year deal worth more than $1 million a year to run the transition. The Bison are barred from bowls and the playoff until 2028, which means the next two seasons are entirely about proving the standard survives the level change, with no postseason to show for it either way. Bison fans keep pointing to James Madison's 2025 playoff berth, just four years into its own FBS life, as the model. Nobody has ever tried the jump with this much history behind them.

On the field

Disciplined, system-first football that has outlasted four different head coaches without losing its identity — the standard, not any one scheme or staff, is what built ten titles, and it's the standard the program is betting travels intact into the Mountain West.

Ten Green and Yellow Banners

since 2011

more

North Dakota State won ten FCS national championships in fourteen seasons -- 2011 through 2015 (a five-peat), 2017 through 2019, then 2021 and 2024 -- under four different head coaches (Craig Bohl, Chris Klieman, Matt Entz, Tim Polasek). No program at any level of college football has matched that density of titles in that span. Every Fargodome game plays out under that banner count.

The Quarterback Pipeline

since 2011

more

Brock Jensen to Carson Wentz to Easton Stick to Trey Lance to Cam Miller to Cole Payton -- North Dakota State has produced a chain of NFL-caliber quarterbacks from a program in Fargo, North Dakota, including two first-round picks (Wentz to Philadelphia in 2016, Lance to San Francisco in 2021) and a 2026 mid-round pick (Payton, also to Philadelphia). Trey Lance's 2019 season -- 16-0, 28 touchdowns, 0 interceptions -- is the individual high-water mark of the pipeline.

The Fargodome

since 1992

more

The Bison play in an 18,700-seat indoor dome in Fargo, North Dakota, that turns every home date into a championship-atmosphere environment -- the most reliable home-field advantage in subdivision football and the physical home of the ten-title dynasty.
