The Long Wait·Offseason

North Texas is the program named for Joe Greene's 'Mean Green' that broke a 66-year ranking drought in 2025 — 12 wins, a poll appearance, and then the coach who built it gone to Oklahoma State before the celebration ended.

North Texas went 12-2 in 2025 (7-1 American), earned its first AP ranking since 1959, reached the American title game (a 34-21 loss to Tulane), and won the New Mexico Bowl 49-47 over San Diego State. Then head coach Eric Morris le…

North Texas went 12-2 in 2025, cracked the AP poll for the first time since 1959, and produced a Burlsworth Trophy quarterback. Then the coach who built it left for Oklahoma State and took the quarterback with him. That is the Mean Green in one paragraph.

The name came from Joe Greene. In the late 1960s, North Texas's defense was so punishing that opponents started calling them the 'Mean Green' — and when Greene went to Pittsburgh and became 'Mean Joe Greene,' the Steelers Hall of Famer carried the Denton program's identity into the NFL's permanent vocabulary. That is the weight behind the name. Four consecutive Sun Belt championships from 2001 to 2004 under Darrell Dickey added the conference dimension. A new on-campus stadium in 2011 added a home. The ingredients for relevance were always present in the recruit-rich DFW Metroplex; what the program needed was the right coach to convert proximity to talent into production.

Eric Morris converted it. A 12-2 2025 season — 7-1 in the American — with Drew Mestemaker winning the Burlsworth Trophy and leading the FBS in passing, an AP ranking for the first time since Eisenhower was president, and an American title game berth (a 34-21 loss to Tulane) before a 49-47 New Mexico Bowl win over San Diego State. Then Morris left for Oklahoma State before the bowl game, and Mestemaker followed him to Stillwater. The program's best season in history ended with the architects walking out the door while the confetti was still in the air.

The 2026 question is the hardest one in the American Conference: can North Texas sustain a breakthrough after losing both the coach who built it and the quarterback who ran it? New staff, new signal-caller, the same DFW talent pool that Morris exploited sitting right there in the Metroplex. The fanbase believes the foundation is real. The historical precedent — programs that peak and regress when a coach leaves — cuts the other way. What 2026 will answer is which of those stories applies to Denton.

How they play

High-octane Air Raid passing under Eric Morris — North Texas's 2025 identity was wide-open, spread formations, quick reads, and Drew Mestemaker distributing the ball to skill players who created after the catch. The DFW Metroplex provides the receiver and skill-position talent to run this system at a G5 level; the question is whether the new staff installs a similar scheme or pivots toward something the next quarterback fits better. DATCU Stadium in Denton is a wind-turbine-powered on-campus venue that gave the program a home-field identity it lacked during its decades at off-campus Fouts Field.

Rituals

Three gameday rituals — the ones outsiders never quite catch.

Joe Greene 'Mean Green' Origin (1966-1968)

since 1966

Joe Greene — defensive tackle at North Texas 1966-1968, #4 NFL draft 1969 — was the original inspiration for the 'Mean Green' nickname. Greene's Hall of Fame NFL career (4 Super Bowls with Pittsburgh Steelers, 'Mean Joe Greene') + the Coca-Cola commercial + the retired #75 jersey make the nickname permanent program identity.

Darrell Dickey 4 Sun Belt Titles (2001-2004)

since 2001

Darrell Dickey's 2001-2004 4 consecutive Sun Belt championships + multiple bowl appearances was the program's modern peak. The era's competitive cycles + the recruiting reach into Texas + the New Orleans Bowl appearances opened the modern Sun Belt G5 ascent narrative.

Apogee Stadium 2011

since 2011

Apogee Stadium (built 2011) — North Texas's first dedicated on-campus football venue + the modern facility — replaced decades at Fouts Field. The 30,850 capacity + the LEED Platinum sustainability rating + the modern construction + the Denton setting create a venue distinct from larger flagship-state programs.

North Texas has climbed into dynasty-caliber territory — into the top 11% of FBS by power rating over the last three seasons, up from the top 25% a year ago. It is a 22-15 record over the last three regular seasons. This is a three-year structural read, not a single result. Power ratings reward the recent past — the question is whether the schedule lets it register as wins outside the model.
