The William & Mary story is rooted in two things: the legendary coaching of Jimmye Laycock (1980–2018, 249 wins, 6 conference titles, 2 FCS semifinal appearances) and the pipeline of leaders he developed. Mike Tomlin, a wide receiver who played for the Tribe from 1990 to 1994, became the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach in 2007 and never had a losing season in 19 years—the longest streak in NFL history. Sean McDermott, another Tribe quarterback, is the Buffalo Bills head coach. Dan Quinn, a defensive coordinator on Laycock's staff, is the Atlanta Falcons head coach. No other FCS program can claim three sitting NFL head coaches.
When Laycock retired after 2018, the question was whether the program's winning culture would survive. Mike London, hired in 2019, answered that question decisively.
