Virginia is the program that waited 122 years for its first 11-win season — then beat an SEC team in the Gator Bowl to seal it, the year a coach on the brink became the best in school history.

Virginia football is 122 years old. It had never won 11 games. Then 2025 happened — a 13-7 Gator Bowl win over No. 25 Missouri to seal the record, a final ranking, and a coach who was on the hot seat two years ago.

The university that Thomas Jefferson founded in 1819 had been playing football since the 1880s, and in all of that time the program had never reached 11 wins. George Welsh's teams in the late 1980s and early 1990s were the closest thing to a sustained run — an ACC title share in 1989, the program's most competitive stretch. Then a long plateau. Then a grief that reshaped what the team means to Charlottesville: three players killed in an on-campus shooting in 2022 that cut the season short and forged something heavier than football inside the program.

Tony Elliott was hired to rebuild and was one more losing season from the door. Instead, 2025 delivered the program's record. Eleven wins. Seven-and-two in the ACC. A Gator Bowl that required beating a ranked SEC opponent to close it. Chandler Morris, the transfer quarterback who won Gator Bowl MVP honors, was denied a seventh year of eligibility by the NCAA and is gone. Virginia brought in Beau Pribula from Missouri and Eli Holstein from Pittsburgh to compete for the job. Elliott returns; the question is whether his staff can replace the quarterback who carried the record season.

The 2026 question in Charlottesville is the one every program asks after its first breakthrough: was that a year or the start of an era? Virginia has one ACC title in its history, and the 2025 team gave the fanbase reason to believe a second one is a real target rather than a dream. Whether that belief compounds or recedes is what the next 12 months of football will tell.

How they play

Portal-built and scheme-driven — Elliott's Virginia acquires proven players from the transfer market and installs them in an offense designed to protect the quarterback and attack downfield with precision over volume. The defense is the program's structural backbone; Scott Stadium in Charlottesville generates real home-field leverage when the team is good. The identity is resilience over flash, and the Good Old Song after wins is sung arm-in-arm by people who waited a long time to mean it.

Rituals

Three gameday rituals — the ones outsiders never quite catch.

Wahoowa

since 1890s

'Wahoowa!' is the program's defining linguistic identity — origin in late-19th-century cheer 'Wah-hoo-wah, Wah-hoo-wah, Uni-V Vir-gin-i-a!' The single-word battle cry is what Cavaliers respond to in the wild. Used as both greeting and farewell.

Run Like Sabres / Sabre Logo

since 1888

The crossed-sabres logo (formalized 1888) is one of the oldest collegiate athletic logos still in use. Jeffersonian academic identity + military-heritage Cavalier imagery + the orange and navy color scheme combine into a distinct visual language.

Good Old Song

since 1893

Sung to the tune of 'Auld Lang Syne' — the Good Old Song is the alma mater that doubles as football fight song. The hand-on-shoulder verse-to-chorus shift is the program's most-iconic moment; visiting fans cite it as one of the most-distinct stadium traditions in the ACC.
