The Southwest Conference collapse in 1996 left Houston — a program in the nation's fourth-largest city, with a Heisman Trophy and a Run-and-Shoot legacy that rewrote what offense could look like — on the wrong side of the invitation list while Texas and Texas A&M got the Big 12 seats. Two decades of mid-major exile followed. Case Keenum became the NCAA's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns; Tom Herman went 13-1 and beat Florida State in the 2015 Peach Bowl; the talent and the results were real. The Big 12 invite in 2023 changed the math. Willie Fritz's second season in 2025 delivered 10 wins — Houston's first 10-win year since 2021 — and a 38-35 bowl win over LSU, the program's sharpest piece of evidence yet that it belongs in the room where it spent three decades knocking. The Cougar Paw — three middle fingers curled inward, thumb and pinky extended — is the Houston fan identity marker. The hand sign's origin: a 1953 incident where Cougar mascot Shasta's paw was bent in a Texas A&M elevator. The gesture became a defiance-symbol against the Aggies + identity marker through every Cougar era.
